Why Trucks With Room to Spare Cares So Much About Helping Those in Need
Volunteer Relief On Wheels
“Sometimes the things we can’t change end up changing us.” -Unknown
Nothing can cement the realization in our minds that so much of what we take for granted on a daily basis can be stripped away quite like unforeseen disasters. We pray that we’re not in the pathway of a hurricane, tornado, wildfire, or earthquake — and most of us are blessed (or fortunate, or lucky, call it what you like) to never have to face the resulting devastation from these events. But what happens when you see a community that has been utterly ruined by disaster? Some folks see it on the news, shake their heads with a sigh, and move on. Others are compelled to action — to lend their time, talents, resources, and abilities — to help those who are suffering and experiencing loss. We’re a community of the latter — and we have big trucks and even bigger hearts.
Meet Our Volunteers
Truck drivers are the blood vessels of this nation, constantly moving supplies from one side of the country to the other. As a major link in the supply chain of America, truck drivers are especially valuable in times of crisis and disaster, especially when supplies need to get to an area quickly. With this in mind, “Trucks With Room to Spare” was created to partner with independents, owner-operators, and transportation companies to help transport supplies to areas in need. We currently partner with over two dozen volunteers who are changing lives every time they get behind the wheel.
Compassion for Others
We are driven (pun intended) to do what we do out of our compassion for our fellow human beings. Our volunteer truck drivers have made the decision to utilize their own resources to provide relief to those in need out of the pure belief that no person is an island — we’re all in this together. We believe that if you have the means to be able to help someone, even through something as simple as offering up a part of your truck to move supplies, you should do it. Perhaps the author Charles Dickens summed it up most succinctly when he wrote “no one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”
It Could Be You
The Golden Rule, taken from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew’s gospel, states that “...in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” Another way to look at it is this — if the shoe were on the other foot, how would you want others to respond to your situation? If the home you’ve worked hard to pay for were wiped out in a matter of minutes by a distaster , would you hope that somebody would come to your aid? The heart of our organization is to live out this ideal — that it could very easily be our families and homes that are destroyed, and that we can be the help that is prayed for.
Giving Back to Those In Need
For many of our volunteer drivers, the communities that we’re helping are communities that we’ve been a part of to one degree or another. We see each and every one of these deliveries as a means to give back to the people and communities that have enriched our lives. If we have the opportunity to give back, even in this simple way, then we’re going to take it — and if you feel the same way, we’d love to have you join our team.
