The Cost of Trucking

As a trucker and a member of TWRTS I wanted to write a little about our industry for those that may not understand why shipping can be so expensive.

Much like any business owner, Owner Operators and Carriers have a lot of overhead.  Even without an "office" the cost of just doing business is high, even before the truck leaves the driveway.  Here is just a small sample of basic required items.

Cargo Insurance - 3000 to 5000 per month, per truck

Liability/Collision Insurance - 400 to 600 per month

BOC3 Registed Agent Fees - 150 per year

Drug Consortium Fees - 50 to 100 per month

Apportioned Licence Plates for truck and trailer - most stated are 1200 to 1500 per year for truck alone.

Truck Payment - depending on truck can range from 1500 to 3000 per month

Trailer Payment - depending on type of equipment 1000 to 2000 per month

and this is all before the truck hauls a load.. And this is just a small sample of the reoccurring expenses for a truck to operate.

Now on to the expensive parts

Tires - 400 to 600 each ( and we have 18)

Fuel - ranges from 3.00 to 5.00 per gallon and I only average like 5.5 miles to the gallon

Fuel Taxes - taxes are generally up to 50% of the cost of fuel at the pump, but we also pay other taxes... Heavy Highway Use Taxes, Bridge Taxes, Toll Roads cost sometimes 10X as much for us than a car.

repairs on the road - most shops charge 125.00 to 190.00 per hour. A road serve call can add up to an additional 250.00 or more for after hours charges and mileage.

Oil - 20.00 to 30.00 per gallon.. my truck holds 10 gallons.  An oil change for us in a shop can cost 300.00 to 500.00 depending on oil and services.

So you see, when we ask for donations or ask if you are able to donate to the cost of operating the truck and fuel, there are reasons.  All these costs are before the owner pays himself or a driver to haul a load.

With the current market in a slump and drivers wanting to help but cant "eat" all the overhead, we have been suggesting donations equal to 1.00 to 1.25 per mile to help drivers.  This is a suggestion, and we understand that some cant do that.  That is why we collect donations and are holding our fundraiser in December. So that we can step in and help drivers when needed.

Some drivers can do it for free out of the kindness of their hearts, but we try to make sure that we help them be able to help NGOs in their time of need.

So if you see us raising money, that is why..  To help our fellow drivers to help others.

IF you are a carrier/OO and want to help, give us a call or email.  If you are an NGO and need help, we will do our best to help in whatever way we can.

People helping people, one truckload at a time....
